I was recently reminded of something a friend of mine said that both shocked and horrified me.
Here is his truck. Can you guess?
The truck in question. Not known for its agility
Well, here it is.
“My mom’s Escalade turns so fast it scares me”
He has only driven this old F150, and was frightened by the nimble handling of a second gen Escalade. Like this:
The Cadillac in question. Not known for its agility either. Image: Google
He has not seen the light. Someone get him a Miata, quick, before it’s too late!

And h e probably just means the power steering has a lot of boost.

You're trying to tell me this isn't nimble?

Probably has to do with being used to a long wheelbase and high ratio steering. Just about any short wheelbase car will scare the hell out of him.

That gen of F-150 is still from the era where trucks drove more like tractors than cars.
But could that glorified Tahoe really be better?

Ha, I bet. I used to drive my mom’s 40 00 lb fwd behemoth of a Volvo XC90 and then I got my Cruze. Night and day difference.

I observed him doing considerable steering to keep the F150 in a straight line. Maybe the Cadillac just steers as well as it left the factory and the truck doesn’t.

Zigging is never the problem. It’s the zagging that puts you into a tree.

That is actually a second Gen Escalade. Cadillac rushed a GMT-400 version into production to stave off the assault posed by the Lincoln Navigator.
And yes, it is a Yukon Denali with a Cadillac crest glued in place of the GMC badge.

Ball joints on that era F150 need to be replaced basically every other oil change.

That is a very likely situation. My father in law’s old ford truck has what I like to call “sailboat” steering. Because there’s a bout 1/4 turn of slop in the steering before anything actually happens. Which also means you have to kind of bounce it back and forth to stay straight

As the owner of one for nearly a decade, I would be remiss to not gently point out the first generation Escalade was actually a GMT400 based truck sold in 1999-2000. The second generation Escalade went to the GMT800 chassis in 2002.

The Cadillac Escalade: It turns on a dime* ·
*As long as that dime is at least 75 yards across.

I owned an F150 of that vintage for a while and have a GMT800 Escalade and Tahoe...in comparison to literally nothing but that F150 your friend is not wrong.

Is that your first gen Escalade? That’s a crazy clean one, they’re all garbage where I live.

WORLDS better. That generation of F150 was the last, to me, really truck feeling F150s. The GMT800 trucks and SUVs are more car like, my wife has an Escalade and I’ve got a Tahoe...they feel way newer than a 10t h gen F150.

That is. That picture was taken in 2017 when I bought the F-150 that replaced it . It is still in the family as my parents occasional moving large objects vehicle. I bought it cheap from a shady used car lot in 2009 with some minor issues and filthy inside and out with 110k on it . Some repairs and two days of cleaning, shampooing, conditioning, and compounding later, if cleaned up well. It’s got around 160k on it now.

I very briefly, for about two months, had the worlds shittiest 1g Yukon Denali. Man was that truck junk. But it had barn doors so I wish I had it back.

Mine has the split tailgate setup, which I prefer. Before it I had a 96 suburban with the barn doors. I found them less preferable to a tailgate.

$20 says the shocks, bushings, Springs, ball joints would show up on justrolledintotheshop. Probably like my friend saying the 2012 eclipse was the best handling car he ever drove coming from a 2003 Passat, that hadn’t seen work since it left the factory

Split tailgate is the best way. I’d put barn doors second, then conventional tailgate, then getting hit by a bus, then a side opening tailgate.
